Sure. You do not have to kill everything and everyone. You can often negotiate with NPCs, bribe them, trick them, intimidate them or charm them, or use other non-combat skills such as Forgery and Stealth.
KotC 2 allows you to create up to six characters from the beginning of the game. During the game, you can increase your party size to a maximum of eight active characters by adding a number of companions. Other modules can have different limits on party size.
