It's not like I ever played Diablo for the story, but even if it was a bit cheesy the tale was dark enough to enjoy. The thing with randomised quest is that you get not only a different task but also a different reward. A simple exemple is that right from the start you can get the poisoned water supply or King Leoric. The water supply will have you enter a special part of the dungeon to kill monsters, and reward you with a ring, while the other scenario will pit you against Leoric, who can be quite powerful in the early game, and give you a helmet. Both rewards are quite good in the early game and you're never sure of what you'll find when you start a new game, and none of them require you to listen to their backstory if you do not want to.
It is pitch black. You are likely to be eaten by a grue.

Right. What I meant was that I personally hadn't noticed the problems you mention because I don't pay sufficient attention to the specific details of the quests (goals and rewards, not backstory).

Just finished the main quest, by the way. I was playing on Hard, and my melee-only Destroyer (Berserker skill tree) really had to struggle not to get instant-killed over and over again on the later levels (30-35). The swarm of enemies populating the last dungeon tileset was just insane, and I burned through all my remaining money reserves when I constantly had to restock my supply of health potions. I can imagine how a character with more ranged attacks would have a distinct advantage late in the game, since it seemed that only the enemies' short-range and melee attacks were really lethal...

Torchlight is so similar to FATE (which is a good thing IMO, my son and I played the heck out of that game) that I think they must be by the same team. The graphics are much improved - I especially like the way you can see below to deeper levels of the mine - and the skill system is more cleanly presented, but it's the same feed-fish-to-your-pet fun.
I play old-school D&D with the New York Red Box, blog about tabletop games at The Mule Abides, and write third-party and first-party stuff for D&D 4E.

I played this game for a decent amount of hours getting a wizard and an archer to around lvl 20 and decided to quit after that. This game is boring, something I never had a problem in Diablo 1 and 2 (at least not in first run through). It was fun at first but there are just too many little things that irritate me for me to continue playing it. The whole game feels like half effort was put into it.
